The brief
- Child Bereavement UK (CBUK) found their middle managers were often in a difficult position in delivering the organisation’s objectives
- To continue delivering their invaluable support and support their team’s wellbeing, CBUK needed to invest in the capability of their middle managers
- They needed their managers to develop the right skillsets and behaviours to deal with any issues that arise
Key challenges:
- Managers were often reliant on their leaders to give them direction and resolve challenge in their teams
- Managers lacked confidence in their personal leadership
- Managers struggled to use their energy wisely, having to balance operational responsibilities with leading teams
NFP's approach
We wanted to provide the managers at Child Bereavement UK with the understanding of their role as a manager and how they could balance their operational and people management responsibilities more effectively. We wanted to empower them to be able to manage their team’s performance, communicate better and influence the people they work with.
What we did
After listening to the client's needs and goals, we:
- Carried out an initial assessment of managers’ capability and confidence in a number of leadership areas
- Designed and delivered a programme to two cohorts of managers from across the organisation, over a period of 4 months:
- Workshop 1 – My Role and responsibilities as a manager
- Workshop 2 Communication and influencing others
- Workshop 3 – Managing performance and giving effective feedback
- We also ran an embedding session 3 months following the programme to keep the learning alive
Key outcomes
- Rated their experience of the programme 9.5/10
- Felt 17% more empowered as a manager
- Increased the understanding of their role and responsibilities as a people manager by 16%
- Increased their ability to manage their team’s performance by 11%
- Were 11% more efficient in time management
Testimonial
“I found so much of the programme incredibly useful, and it has massively motivated and inspired me!”
“Even though I have attended leadership courses in the past, there were new things to learn and some different ways of looking at things. It is always good to have a refresher and a chance to develop and grow personally, as well as take things back to the team.”
